Inspection and quality assurance for Porthos' CO₂ reduction project

Inspection services

Client profile

Porthos is a partnership between Gasunie, EBN, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The project focuses on reducing CO₂ emissions by transporting and permanently storing CO₂ captured from industrial companies in the Port of Rotterdam in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea seabed. The infrastructure consists of a pipeline running from the Botlek area to a compressor station at the Maasvlakte. Here, the CO₂ is pressurised for transport via an undersea pipeline to the P18 platform, from where it is injected into a depleted gas field over three kilometres beneath the North Sea. With this CO₂ network, Porthos offers a cost-effective solution for reducing CO₂ emissions—an important step towards making the industry more sustainable.

Challenge

In the Porthos project, the multilayer polypropylene coating of the pipelines presented a unique opportunity to achieve the highest quality standards for the safe transport of CO₂. When the initially selected supplier in the United Kingdom faced production challenges, alternative solutions were quickly implemented. The coating work was successfully continued at a different location, where production and quality controls were carefully ensured. Thanks to strict adherence to international standards, such as NV and S 56 norms, the project remained on track to guarantee safety and quality within tight deadlines.

Solution by Smart AIS

Smart AIS was brought in to support the project with production control, quality assurance, and project management. We followed a structured approach to ensure progress and quality, maintaining direct communication with the client throughout the process. The following aspects were part of our assignment:

International inspection coordination: Our inspectors supervised the production and coating of the pipelines, starting at the production site in Greece. When coating issues were identified in the United Kingdom, we advised relocating the work, where we continued coating inspections without interruption. Throughout the process, we ensured all work complied with international standards such as NV norms and the S 56 standard.

Quality assurance and troubleshooting: Thanks to the continuous presence of our inspectors on location, the quality of the coating was strictly monitored. We provided swift solutions to ensure that the pipelines were delivered on time and met the highest quality standards.

Proactive project management: Smart AIS facilitated regular consultations with Porthos and other stakeholders. Through real-time reporting and short communication lines, the client always had insight into progress, enabling timely decisions and keeping the project on schedule.

Result and impact

Thanks to Smart AIS’s timely intervention, the pipelines were successfully relocated and coated in line with the required international quality standards. The pipes were delivered on time, keeping the project on schedule. Through our close collaboration and expertise in international standards, Smart AIS helped Porthos minimise delays and safeguard the project’s quality.

Benefits of working with Smart AIS

With expertise in international standards, flexible problem-solving, and continuous quality management, the Porthos project stayed on track despite challenges. Swift and strategic actions, such as relocating coating activities, along with proactive project management, ensured consistent quality. Transparent reporting and an integrated approach provided full support to the client, ensuring the project was successfully completed within the set timelines.
